About

Via Danubiana is an ecotourism trail created by Asociația MaiMultVerde, which follows the Romanian stretch of the Danube River and has as its main goal the promotion of ecotourism in Danubian communities.

At present, only certain sections of the 1,075 kilometers the Danube flows through Romanian territory are used for tourism, even though the flora and fauna are similar to those found in the Danube Delta. The area has been identified as one of the most important biodiversity regions in the world. The river is home to a great variety of species and rare and endangered habitats. It is also a region with a rich cultural heritage, where the lives of locals are deeply intertwined with the life of the river.

Via Danubiana offers explorers unique experiences, from natural and cultural heritage to landscapes found nowhere else in Europe, such as the Danube Gorge and the Iron Gates, the river’s islands and sandbanks as it winds through our country, the Danube Delta, and the spectacular areas where the river meets the Black Sea.

Our goal

By developing a wide-ranging ecotourism trail along the Danube, nature-loving tourists will discover the area’s enormous potential. At the same time, local communities will be able to benefit from sustainable economic development.

In a first phase, we aim to develop the route in Giurgiu County, along a stretch of approximately 100 km. We have identified several protected areas and Natura 2000 sites in the region. The route passes through riverside forests, islands, channels, and sandbanks, but these are not currently accessible to the public due to a lack of infrastructure and promotion.

Who we are

Since its founding in 2008, Asociația MaiMultVerde has implemented environmental protection projects in line with its mission to build a culture of responsibility and volunteerism for people and nature in Romania.

One of its main areas of action is the promotion of a sustainable lifestyle. Over the years, the association has implemented numerous programs and campaigns, both practical and online, for all ages. These have covered topics such as promoting natural areas along the Danube, fighting plastic pollution in water, and protecting and developing green spaces in major cities (www.maimultverde.ro).

The VIA DANUBIANA project was selected as part of #RaiffeisenComunități, the sustainability NGO accelerator initiative of Raiffeisen Bank Romania, supported by the Association for Community Relations.
