Via Danubiana is a project initiated by the MaiMultVerde Association, dedicated to reconnecting people with the Danube and nature. The route follows the river along its entire Romanian section, crossing meadows, forests, villages, and historic towns. The project aims to create a sustainable ecotourism network that supports local economies while helping conserve the biodiversity and cultural heritage of the Danube region.
Under the slogan “Via Danubiana – the route that turns you toward the water,” the project aims, in the long term, to cover the entire course of the Danube in Romania—over 1,000 kilometers—and offer a continuous route that can be explored on foot, by bicycle, or by kayak.
“Via Danubiana aims to connect Danube communities and support their development by sustainably valuing the natural and cultural assets they hold. Through this route, we invite people to discover the ‘Romanian Riviera’ and offer locals the opportunity to showcase their hospitality, traditions, and entrepreneurial spirit.”
— Doru Mitrana, President of the MaiMultVerde Association
Our Vision
By developing a large ecotourism route along the Danube, we want nature lovers to discover the immense potential of the Danube landscapes. At the same time, local communities can benefit from sustainable economic development based on the natural and cultural resources they already possess.
Starting in 2023, we developed the first section of the route in Giurgiu County, covering approximately 100 km. From 2025, we are continuing work on the section in Teleorman County. In both regions, we identified protected areas and Natura 2000 sites, with the route crossing riparian forests, islands, canals, and river islets—made accessible through minimal, non-invasive interventions. Although valuable, these places remained hard to access due to the lack of infrastructure and promotion.
For 2026, we plan to expand the project into Călărași and Olt counties. In the long run, the goal is to cover the entire Romanian course of the Danube, across all 13 riparian counties (Caraș-Severin, Mehedinți, Gorj, Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Călărași, Ialomița, Brăila, Galați, Tulcea, and Constanța), totaling 1,075 km of route from Baziaș to Sulina. In parallel, we aim to maintain the already developed segments, constantly update information, and increase the involvement of communities and public institutions in biodiversity protection and local development.
Who We Are
Since its founding in 2008, the MaiMultVerde Association has been implementing environmental protection projects aligned with its mission to build a culture of responsibility and volunteerism for people and nature in Romania.
One of our priority areas of action is promoting a sustainable lifestyle. Over the years, the association has carried out both practical and online programs and campaigns for all ages, focusing on themes such as promoting the natural areas along the Danube, combating plastic pollution in waterways, and protecting and developing green spaces in major cities (www.maimultverde.ro).
