Danube Promenade in Giurgiu

Arranged along the Danube, the promenade offers a stunning panorama and is a favorite spot for both locals and tourists for relaxing outdoor walks. The area, equipped with walkways, benches, and green spaces, is ideal for a break after a long walk, cycling, or paddling along the Via Danubiana.

Cama Community Forest

Planted in recent years by the MaiMultVerde Association just 10 minutes from downtown Giurgiu, Cama Forest spans 20 hectares where over 250,000 trees and shrubs from 55 species have been planted. Here you’ll also find 3 murals created by Wanda Hutira on the concrete piles of a decommissioned bridge located on the canal bank that connects the city of Giurgiu to the Danube.

Giurgiu Fortress

Built on the banks of the Danube in the 14th century by Mircea the Elder, Giurgiu Fortress is an important historical monument at the border between Romania and Bulgaria. Today, the fortress (more precisely, the remaining wall fragments) remains a symbol of local history, resilience, and medieval Balkan architecture. It has been reinforced in recent years by the city hall.

The (Old) Curved Bizetz Bridge

The Bizetz Bridge in Giurgiu is unique in Europe due to its curved construction—a great challenge for architect Anghel Saligny and builder Ion Ionescu Bizetz. Completed in 1905, it was the first bridge in Europe built with a horizontal curve. It was erected over the St. George Basin to support the urbanization of Ramadan Island (Old Beach) and the city’s industrial development. The old bridge remains a landmark in the city’s evolution.

La Bordei (Traditional House)

The historical “bordei” in Giurgiu is hidden on a small, quiet residential street. It is the last of its kind still standing in the city and represents a traditional lowland-style dwelling. If you arrive here, you’ll likely be warmly welcomed by the owners, who will probably invite you to take close-up photos of this small piece of local history.

Teohari Antonescu County Museum

Here you will find local and national artifacts, historical documents, as well as objects discovered during archaeological digs in the region, offering insights into the civilizations and historical settlements that once existed in Giurgiu County. The museum features exhibitions on local traditions, folk costumes, and handicrafts, plus a “family tree” of rulers who passed through the area and a history of conflicts with the Ottoman Empire.

Clock Tower

Built in 1866 in neoclassical style, from brick and stone, the Clock Tower is located right in the city center, near the Central Market. It is about 30 meters tall, and the clock on its facade was meant to provide locals with the exact time. Over the years, the tower underwent modifications and restorations. Although it is no longer functional, it remains a symbol of the city.

Friendship Bridge

The Giurgiu-Ruse Bridge, also known as the “Friendship Bridge,” connects the two neighboring cities from Romania and Bulgaria and is considered one of the most complex engineering projects of its time (it was inaugurated in 1954). The bridge is over 2,000 meters long and 30 meters wide, with two levels: one for road traffic and one for rail, and also includes a pedestrian walkway. It is an essential link between the two countries, facilitating trade and tourism.

Youth Educational Center, Găujani

The center is located in an old boyar house in the commune of Găujani, just 30 kilometers from the city of Giurgiu. The building hosts a small museum with traditional costumes and serves as a gathering and working place for women in the community. The youth educational center is also a vibrant space where children and teenagers come together for various educational and cultural activities. Here, some local traditions such as Călușul and Drăgaica have been revived.

Saint John Rusu Monastery, Slobozia

The monastery is located at the end of a quiet 1–2 km path, narrow and bordered by forests, and was established on the grounds of a former military barracks. If you look closely, in the monastery courtyard you will see some of the cells built on small hills, which were once used as training grounds for soldiers. The place hosts pilgrims in modest conditions and based on donations, depending on the time of year and occupancy rate.

World War II Bunkers, Slobozia

The bunkers are reinforced concrete fortifications built to withstand bombings and protect soldiers and military equipment. They defended key points such as the Friendship Bridge and the country’s access routes. Although they are not developed as tourist attractions, the bunkers may be interesting for history and military architecture enthusiasts. On Via Danubiana, you can visit one of them in the commune of Slobozia, just 10 minutes by car or 15–20 minutes by bicycle from Giurgiu.

Ciobanu Island

Located just beneath the Friendship Bridge, Ciobanu is one of the many Danube islands formed by sediment accumulation in the riverbed, offering a specific habitat for various plant and animal species. The island has sandy terrain and vegetation typical of wetlands. Though small, the island is ecologically important, especially in an area where modern infrastructure, such as the Friendship Bridge, dominates the landscape.

Ostrov Mocanu Island

A wild beach, forest, fine sand, and waves created by the boats that often pass through the area. Fairytale sunsets you can enjoy either from a boat or from the riverbank. What more could you want on a scorching summer day after a hectic week? The island is part of a network of Danube islets and branches. Because it is periodically flooded, especially during spring water level rises, the island features rich and diverse vegetation.

Old Beach in Giurgiu (Ramadan)

One of the most popular and accessible beaches for locals in Giurgiu, a meeting place since the interwar period, when Giurgiu was a flourishing city with an active social life. After World War II and during the communist era, the beach began to be neglected due to urbanization and industrialization. Nevertheless, the beach’s revitalization potential is still a topic of community interest.

Gostinu Beach (“Gostinești”)

Known as the “Vama Veche of the Danube,” Gostinu Beach is located at the edge of the village with the same name and attracts more and more tourists each year, just 20 kilometers from the city of Giurgiu. Although the area hasn’t developed tourist infrastructure and lacks accommodation or restaurant options, visitors are drawn here for the peace and the joy of swimming.

Perla Dunării (The Danube Pearl)

A place renowned for its fish soup. From the restaurant terrace, you can watch the river cruise ships arrive and depart or glimpse the tall buildings of Ruse.

In addition to fish soup, the menu offers fish roe, seafood salad, smoked shad, or fried bleak. As specialties, you can choose between carp stew, fried carp, fried pike perch, breaded catfish, or trout or catfish stew. Whatever you pick, make sure it comes with mămăligă (polenta) and garlic sauce.

Sofia Pastry Shop

If you’re near the Danube, you can’t miss the dolangaci pie. Its name comes from Turkish and means tangled, labyrinth, but it was brought across the water by Bulgarian neighbors. The pie, which has become traditional in the Dobrogea region, combines thin dough sheets with a pumpkin filling, being appreciated for its fresh taste and fine texture.

In Giurgiu, you can order this pie at the Sofia pastry shops (there are three in the city). You must place your order 24 hours in advance so they have time to prepare it. You can only order a full tray, which costs between 50–70 lei, but it will feed a group of friends or serve as your dessert for the next few days of hiking on Via Danubiana.
