The Danube’s beaches offer a peaceful retreat for locals and visitors alike, as well as a quick alternative to the long trip to the seaside. However, they often become dumping grounds for waste abandoned in nature or carried by the river as it flows through the country. That’s why, on October 11, 2024, we returned to #ViaDanubiana, at the Old Beach in Giurgiu, where we collected 182 bags of waste with the help of 40 volunteers, including representatives from the European Commission in Romania and students from the Faculty of Geography in Bucharest.

Of the bags handed over to the local sanitation company, 42 contained household waste, 140 were filled with recyclable materials, and other inappropriate items were also removed from the beach—such as barrels, chairs, and rubber tires.
