The second #ViaDanubiana marker was installed on Saturday, November 23, at Giurgiu Fortress, inside the Cama Community Forest. Together with over 100 volunteers present at the event, we planted 5,000 saplings in the first part of the day, continuing the forest established by the MaiMultVerde Association three years ago. Afterwards, we walked part of the Via Danubiana trail along the Cama Canal, which connects the city of Giurgiu to the Danube.
The stop at Giurgiu Fortress gave us the opportunity to inaugurate the project’s second marker and to discuss the importance of promoting ecotourism in Danube communities.
Giurgiu Fortress, also known as Mircea the Elder’s Citadel, is located on the banks of the Danube and is an important historical monument at the border between Romania and Bulgaria. Built in the 14th century by Mircea the Elder, the fortress played a crucial role in defending Wallachia from Turkish invasions. Over time, it was abandoned and fell into ruin.
Today, Giurgiu Fortress (or rather the remaining portions of its walls) stands as a symbol of history, local resilience, and medieval Balkan architecture, and has been reinforced in recent years by the city hall.
