The second #ViaDanubiana marker was installed on Saturday, November 23, at the Giurgiu Fortress, within the Cama Community Forest. Together with over 100 volunteers present at the event, we planted 5,000 saplings in the first part of the day to supplement the forest established by MaiMultVerde Association three years ago, and later walked a portion of the Via Danubiana trail along the Cama Canal, which connects the city of Giurgiu to the Danube.
The stop at Giurgiu Fortress offered us the opportunity to inaugurate the second trail marker in the project and to discuss the importance of promoting ecotourism in Danube communities.
Giurgiu Fortress, also known as Mircea the Elder’s Stronghold, is located on the banks of the Danube and stands as a significant historical monument on the border between Romania and Bulgaria. Built in the 14th century by Mircea the Elder, the fortress played a crucial role in defending Wallachia against Turkish invasions. Over time, it was abandoned and turned into a ruin.
Today, Giurgiu Fortress (or more precisely, the remaining sections of its walls) remains a symbol of history, local resilience, and medieval Balkan architecture, having been partially restored in recent years by the local municipality.
